Friday Couple: Pip and Rosie

In case you missed the last Friday Couple, you can read my thoughts on Hayden and Aurora from How to Keep a Boy from Kissing You here.

The books I've been reading recently haven't had much in terms of romance, so instead of taking a couple from something contemporary, this time I'm going for sci-fi (in fact my favourite series in the genre so far). For those living outside Australia or who don't know where these two are from,  Pip and Rosie are from The Rosie Black Chronicles by Lara Morgan. It's a trilogy, with the books being called Genesis, Equinox, and Dark Star. For the sake of keeping things simple, I'm going to focus this post on the first book.

Pip and Rosie may have gotten off to a rocky start, but when it soon became obvious that they would have to work together, things soon began to warm up. I wouldn't say that this book is totally focused on the romance (there is much more important action going on), but it was still there in a subtle way. The two definitely make a good team, and with Rosie being a female protagonist that can seriously kick-but I liked them even more.

Pip is a bit of a hard shell to crack in the beginning, and is just trying to do his job working for his boss Riley. Once he meets Rosie though and starts to eventually develop feelings for her his whole demeanor changes. Soon he becomes quite protective, and although he knows enough not to let her fight some of her own battles, he is still there for her when she needs him most.

What I loved most about this couple in particular was that there was none of that dreaded insta-love that you tend to find in other YA novels. Instead, their is a gradual build-up in their relationship which does leave room for more development in the other books of the trilogy. This series isn't heavily based on the romance either, it's a perfect balance between thrilling action and emotional bonds that makes it one of my all-time favourites.
