I fought this book. My mother and sister loved it and I reluctantly agreed to try it. My pride was a bit wounded when I realized I would have to admit that I was wrong and that I did really love it. This is the more traditional historical fiction we think of. It takes place during World War II and follows ordinary people that are forced to deal with this terrifying development. Rumors of War opened my eyes to historical fiction.

I love the historical setting here. It adds a lot of color and atmosphere to this novel and was my first historical novel that lay more on the side of fiction than reality, if you know what I mean. It doesn't deal with real historical events as much.

I'm not sure I really need to say much here. You know how hard I love this series. The setting is perfect. I think the most appealing thing about historical fiction is that I feel like I'm in a different world when I'm not. Although, I suppose I kind of am since society is very different than it was 50 or 200 years ago.

I've always been fascinated by the Salem Witch Trials and I feel like this gives a different and more in depth look at them than say The Witch of Blackbird Pond. Excellent novel.

I just barely read and reviewed this one. In short, it was fantastic. Again, everything was so immersed in the time period that I actually forgot that this fictional book was taking place in the real world sometimes. The fact that it takes place in Russia is an extra plus because you get to see things differently. Because it takes place during the Cold War and Yulia is Russian, America is the bad guy a lot of the time and that was an interesting perspective.
I'm not a historical fiction lover either, but 2 of my top 5 all time favorite books are HF!! How did that happen? For me, it's gotta be a VERY specific topic for me to get into. I did just come across Born of Illusion last week and it's on my short list. My two HF that I love ~ The Night Circus and The Shadow of the Wind. Amazing book and series for the 2nd one!!
ReplyDeleteI almost read The Night Circus but decided not to. I hope you like Born of Illusion!
DeleteI have not read any of these! Thanks for a great list. *adding books to TBR pile*
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy them all!
